Various grassroots initiatives are emerging in order to respond to the refugee crisis here in Greece and all over Europe. And the leaders of the world once again back to their chess moves -
"How to play this refugee game now that it is too visible and big to the world to ignore it and what is our political gain depending our move - will our voters or the world like us or not ?"
as if refugees just appeared suddenly out of nowhere, as if nothing could be done to prevent the crisis, or as if previous chess war games are not responsible for this everyday tragedy.
"Why only in moments of big crisis, when there is no other clear alternative, we reach out and act?" It is not a philosophical question, but a request, a cry for strengthening prevention mechanisms so that the life of thousands don't loose their dignity and risk their lives. Melissa Fleming reports that "some 2,500 refugees and migrants are estimated to have died or gone missing this year, trying to reach Europe. This death toll does not include yesterday's tragedy off Libya where numbers of deaths are still unconfirmed,"
But let's be realistic and accept the situation how it is.
Germany few weeks ago suspends the Dublin II Treaty, and does not send back to the European country of first entry Syrian refugees (again something that for many years the southern European countries, receivers of the majority of the influx of refugees have been asking and fighting for).
Yes "Germany’s response to the refugee crisis is admirable. But I fear it cannot last", article by Doris Akrap argues that this country's in question perceived positive action is not as well planned, another patch with no sustainable positive impact. He writes, "I often ask myself: what is going to happen, when the new refugees demand more than a tent, a bottle of water and a slice of bread? How will German society deal with this next turning point? What if it turns out that not every refugee has the skills to equip them for the “made in Germany” brand? Will Willkommenskultur end, when it involves not just singing Hallelujah together, but helping people to become autonomous and articulate their own wishes? Will the liberal segment of German society that is drawing so much praise right now have the determination to fight their own government and abolish Dublin III and Schengen? "
And let's imagine or visualise that our governments do care to create long term safety nets for the refugees, but their excuse is the financial crisis " We have no money " ... UNHCR do announce shortages of UN resources; "The UN’s humanitarian agencies are on the verge of bankruptcy and unable to meet the basic needs of millions of people because of the size of the refugee crisis in the Middle East, Africa and Europe, senior figures within the UN have told the Guardian",
What do we do?
What if we tax all the speculative financial transactions and all the money circulating at the tax havens. Is it so difficult or there is no political or corporate will?
A prevention mechanism. Here you go: TOBIN TAX is not a new idea; ATTAC, a movement organisation fighting economic justice has been advocating for its application for many years. Andrew Smiths argues that Tobin Tax "Not only would this help pay for handling an immediate human tragedy, it could provide resources for inevitable future problems of the global public sphere, like the rise of environmental refugees in a warming world.".

There are solutions...
We should steal this ball... restart the earth game
and put it back in right motion...
There are solutions to influence our governments...and we should advocate for them while at the same time we can work at grassroots level...
Two days ago, a friend of mine called me. She asked if I can find a couple or a family of refugees to host at her house for some time. "I can't do much, but I want to do something. If I have some space why no sharing it?" she said. I have met in the past in Madrid a group of people that used to host at their houses teenage unaccompanied immigrants kids. I sense that there are more people that want to actively put in action their solidarity spirit but they don't know how or they are too lazy to look for it. We are all somehow lost in our individual survival needs and lifestyles...
I then searched and it already exits a German website where it matches refugees with locals.
"We are convinced that refugees should not be stigmatized and excluded by being housed in mass accommodations. Instead, we should offer them a warm welcome. We believe we can establish a more humane culture of welcoming refugees!"
FLAT-SHARING - open our homes to those who have walked kms and need a bed to rest - It is not the solution and we should not carry all the burden but it is an act of empathy that help them feel alleviated even for a bit.
The locals in the Greek islands that many already lack a lot, yet still thanks to their solidarity movements of all these months and years there have created a safety network for the people that manage to arrive at the shores alive. But it is not enough...Lack of organisation, coordination, resources, planning, makes thousands of people stuck in the islands living with the minimum and in terrible conditions.
They have all the right to make this journey to defend their lives, and it is not enough that the big economies of the world accept them in their countries, it is also urgent and important to make their journey easier, with less danger and with dignity.
Here are the organisations that raise money, food, clothes in Greece...till the rest of the protection mechanisms work how they are supposed to.
On the meantime, We can all give a hand.
-http://mazinatafame.blogspot.gr They raise food, clothes, toys etc till this Friday.
